James Love is a vocalist, a jazz singer. Growing up in St. Louis, James
discovered music at an early age, listening to the church choirs along with the
music of the streets. His first vocal experience came in the high school choir,
encouraged to enroll in Lincoln University (Missouri), he majored in the vocal
music department to pursue a vocal career.
Although classically trained, his heart & soul was that of a jazz singer. James
began to study the masters and soon made his decision to head east: New York
City, eventually settling in Boston. It was here that he began his professional
journey, while teaching Theater Arts at the University of Massachusetts and
Amherst, he worked with a jazz group called “Group Therapy” that played
throughout the New England area, opening for such acts as Jon Hendricks and
Family including Bobby McFerran, Freddie Hubbard, Marlena Shaw and Etta
James among others.
After a few years it was time for the west coast. He moved away from music
briefly in order to earn a master’s degree in clinical psychology, however his love
for music never diminished. He soon returned to the music scene with a
vengeance.
In 2001 James was voted the best male jazz vocalist for the Long Beach Jazz
Search. His new CD project “James Love-Invitations”, has met with glowing
reviews. James Love’s performance is best summed up by James Janisse,
Program host for KJZZ, 88.1FM (Long Beach, CA.)
“At a time when male vocalist appear to be in decline, it’s refreshing to welcome
a newcomer to the scene. James has the power of voice while retaining the
tenderness that all balladeers must have. He’s both smooth and coarse and yet
always elegant in his delivery. All that’s left is for time to tell the tale. Experience
as I have the majesty of the music as presented by James Love!”
